What to Wear to Prom, a Wedding and Father’s Day

Check the dress code for prom or a wedding. For Father’s Day, choose clothes around his plans and confirm his size before buying a gift.

For a wedding or prom, settle the dress code before choosing a color. A tuxedo, a matching suit and a dress casual outfit serve different occasions. Once you know what is expected, choose the shirt, shoes and accessories together and leave time to check the fit.

What to wear to prom

Check the school’s dress requirements, then choose a suit or tuxedo you’re comfortable wearing. With a solid suit, add color or pattern through a tie or pocket square. If the jacket has a pattern or detailed trim, keep the shirt and accessories simple.

To coordinate colors with someone, compare fabric samples if possible. A photo can help, but screens can change how a shade looks. Browse suits and tuxedos, then look at ties, bow ties and accessories.

What to wear to a wedding

Use the couple’s dress code as your guide:

  • Black tie: choose a tuxedo. A black suit with a bow tie does not meet the same dress code.
  • Black tie optional: a tuxedo or a dark suit with a dress shirt and tie is usually appropriate.
  • Cocktail or semiformal: start with a suit. Choose the color and accessories to suit the venue and the couple’s instructions.
  • Casual: ask the couple what they mean by casual. An outdoor venue doesn’t automatically make jeans or an open collar appropriate.

If you’re in the wedding party, wear the agreed outfit. Guests should ask before wearing white or ivory. Browse our dress shirts and dress shoes to finish the outfit. On Time Fashions sells suits and dresswear. We do not offer rentals.

For a family meal, a shirt with his usual jeans or dress pants may be all he needs. Consider a suit if he has occasions to wear one.

For a gift, confirm his size and read our return policy. Browse dress casual shirts, sweaters and sets for options beyond a suit.

Try the full outfit before the event

Before you buy, confirm which pieces the listing includes. Add the shirt, neckwear, belt if needed, socks and dress shoes to your plan so you can see the cost of the complete outfit.

Try everything on together. The shirt collar should feel comfortable fastened, the jacket should close without pulling, and the suit pants should sit comfortably when you sit down. Check their length in the shoes you will wear.

Ask about any alterations before choosing a size or relying on a completion date. Bring the outfit back out before the event, with enough time to address a missing accessory or fit issue.
