Measure your chest and waist, then compare them with the suit’s size guide. Check the cut and jacket length as well as the size number.

Measure your chest and waist

Use a soft tape measure and ask someone to help. Stand naturally and breathe normally. Keep the tape level around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms, without pulling it tight.

Body chest measurement goes around you. Flat jacket width measures across the garment. Illustration, not to scale.

Many US jacket sizes are based on chest circumference in inches. Check whether the brand’s chart gives body or garment measurements. A measurement taken around your chest cannot be compared directly with the width of a jacket laid flat.

For your waist, place the tape where the product’s size guide tells you to measure. Record the result without adding extra inches. The brand may already allow for room to move.

Read the complete size label

Check the jacket length: Short, Regular or Long. Check the pants size that comes with that jacket, since the pairing can vary by suit. Read the listing for the included pieces and whether the pants need hemming.

Check the suit while wearing it

  • Shoulders and collar: check for pulling, dents at the shoulders or a gap behind the neck.
  • Jacket: button the jacket as you would wear it and move your arms. The fabric should not pull across your middle.
  • Vest, if included: check that it reaches the waistband comfortably, with no strip of shirt showing.
  • Pants: check the waist, seat and thighs while sitting, standing and walking. Check the length with the shoes you plan to wear.

Try another size or cut if the suit feels wrong. Before buying a jacket that is too large, ask a tailor which parts can be altered.
